Dear Parent and Student and Educator,

This week and next we have full school weeks.  Both this Wednesday, February 28th and next Wednesday, March 6th are early out Wednesdays. High school conferences are March 7th and 14th and will be held virtually.  Teachers will be sending out communication regarding scheduling.

Boys and Girls State: Juniors this opportunity is for you! –Deadline this Wednesday.

The American Legion would like to send some of our juniors to Boys and Girls State this summer.  This is a program to teach about our Government, how to run for an office, and teamwork. We also offer a Lawyers program; State Troopers program; and the Army Guard will run them through the obstacle course. The American Legion Post 141 has 4 open slots this year and if we get more then 4 we can find a Post to sponsor. Contact Mrs. Duitsman for more information and complete this questionnaire by Wednesday, 29 February 2024. Make a copy and share the Google Document with Mrs. Duitsman or print off and complete to turn into the office. Girls State is June 16-21st in Des Moines, IA.  Boys State is June 23-28th in Johnston, IA.

Please help us to nominate our Teachers of the Year: Deadline is this Friday. 

The Glenwood Community School Foundation is excited to present the 2024 John A. Gregory Teacher of the Year. Nominations are open!   Nominate a teacher who inspires students to reach their highest academic potential. The finalist will receive $500 from John B. Gregory, Farm Bureau Financial Services Agent, with an additional $500 from the Glenwood Community School Foundation for use in their classroom or content area. Senior Information & Scholarship Update: Reminder to keep checking the Senior Document.

Caps and Gowns: Deadline to order is this Friday. Order at Jostens.com.

Local Scholarship Update: 

Seniors were given their folder of scholarship applications that they requested on Thursday, Feb 22.

Scholarship applications are due back March 18 to the counseling office.  

 

After Prom Committee Fundraiser: Dodgeball Tournament!

Back by request of students we will hold a dodgeball tournament on March 14th at the HS at 5pm

Teams can be Coed, all male or all female. All teams will compete against each other. Teams to be made up of students only. Teams should have at least 6 players but no more than 8 (6 starters with 2 subs). $40 per team. Please turn money and waivers into Mrs Mount by March 11th.

R.O.A.R. Raising our Aspiring RAMS  

Students interested in the field of education, this opportunity is for you!  Partner with Glenwood Schools to receive training and support to pay for part of your education degree.  High School students can begin the program in the fall of their 11th-grade year. During the spring of their 12th-grade year, individuals can apply for one of the 3-5 slots for the A.A. & paraprofessional position. A.A. program provided through Iowa Western Community College. Upon graduation, the High School graduates will start as an educational associate while also taking online or night/weekend courses through IWCC pre-BA education program.

New Learning Opportunity: Certificate programs 

We are excited to announce that IWCC certificate programs will start at SWITCH (located near Malvern on HWY 34) in August 2024. Glenwood High School is partnering with SWITCH and IWCC to offer the following two certification programs: Electromechanical and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Prerequisites: Electromechanical students:  will benefit from three years of math, but these are not required. CNA students: must be 16 years of age or older to take the State of Iowa CNA exam and work in a care facility. Priority will be given to students who have completed coursework relating to these pathways: for example, career and technical education coursework and health and science coursework at GHS. Students are required to be in good standing for attendance and behavior and be highly motivated to participate. If you are interested in either of these programs, contact Mrs. Rodenburg, 11th/12th counselor.

 

Shout out to the Student Council and our teacher volunteers for a wonderful Winter Formal!

Student advocates and leaders helped to make this dance a reality, planning everything from the advertising to the activities and food.  Incredibly impressed by our STUCO! It was a successful event! 

 

Booster Club Members & Glenwood Ram Supporters,

The  2024 Glenwood Booster Club Auction is Saturday, March 2nd and will be at Kaufman Hall at Holy Rosary Church. Doors open at 5:30, Dinner will be served at 6:30 with the live auction starting after 7:30pm.This fundraiser is the biggest of the year for the Glenwood Booster Club and all proceeds go back to the Glenwood Booster Club. This past year the Glenwood Booster Club donated over $215,000 with over $125,000 going towards the high school weight room renovation project. Avenue Scholars –Sophomore Opportunity: Friday Application Deadline

Avenue Scholars Southwest Iowa is excited to provide interested sophomore students with the opportunity to apply for a full ride scholarship to Iowa Western. Information about Ave Scholars SWI was also shared with your student in person last week!

Ave Scholars SWI Application 

An overview of Ave Scholars SWI organization and programming:

  • Our mission is to provide motivated students with educational and training opportunities in a variety of quality career options
  • Students explore careers, attend job shadows, and learn skills needed to succeed in full-time employment
  • Students are designated a part-time, paid summer internships in their career field
  • After high school, students attend IWCC, or an Ave Scholars approved career training program
  • Ave Scholars provides a scholarship to pay tuition, books, any tools, and fees required for IWCC or approved career training programs

 

The application is due Friday, March 1st, 2023. Please note, Ave Scholars may seek further information upon review of application. 

Once applications are submitted, staff will interview eligible students and select scholars.
