During the week of June 26-29, new teachers to Glenwood CSD for the 23-24 school year had the opportunity to engage in optional learning activities. The week started off with consultants from the Flippen Group, who were trained in a framework called Capturing Kids Hearts. This framework focuses on establishing positive relationships and social expectations in all 6-12 classrooms and schools at GCSD. The consultants conducted sessions on Monday and Tuesday.
On Wednesday and Thursday, Dr. Chad Lang, the Assistant Superintendent, led the annual new teacher summit. This summit covered various aspects of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and grading across all the models employed by Glenwood CSD. The summit aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of these areas to the new teachers.
Additionally, there were other sessions and speakers featured throughout the week. Cindy Menendez, the Director of Special Services, and Instructional Coaches Tami Bertini, Ericka Lang, Derrica Hutchings, and Ben Haynes addressed topics such as teacher leadership, instructional coaching, and professional learning communities.
Overall, more than 20 educators participated in these valuable four days of learning experience in Glenwood.

Some of our teachers from Northeast Elementary & West Elementary went to the National Get Your Teach on Conference in Dallas, TX last week! The conference is the Nation's best and most engaging professional development conference for PreK-12th grade teachers.

Congratulations to our very own 1st grade teacher, Ms. Jessica Jones. It isn't everyday one of our very own is published in a scholarly journal! Ms. Jones collaborated with colleagues at UNO to write research on phonics in small group settings. Her article was accepted in the Indiana State Literacy Journal, Spring 2023 edition. Ms. Jones is a graduate of the UNO CADRE and entering her third year of teaching for Northeast Elementary in the fall of 2023. The full ink to the article can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16LhdRxYKIloY6rWV7pwWgasvTxGoFc4U/view?usp=sharing
The title of the article is: "The Use of Phoneme Grapheme Mapping to Improve Decoding in the Primary Classroom"
A short summary is as follows:
The article discusses the importance of phonemic awareness, which refers to the ability to recognize and manipulate the smallest units of sounds, known as phonemes. Without this ability, decoding words can be extremely difficult or even impossible. The study aimed to investigate whether teaching phoneme-grapheme mapping strategies in a small group setting, along with explicit feedback, would enhance students' decoding abilities.
Please congratulate Ms. Jones the next time you see her on this wonderful accomplishment!
