The Glenwood Community School District receives more than $2.5 million annually in statewide one-cent sales tax funds (SAVE) to support facility improvements and other projects. On Tuesday, March 5, our community will consider renewing the Revenue Purpose Statement to allow the district to leverage future SAVE dollars to support programs like Kids Place, THRIVE, and more. A renewed RPS will not increase property taxes, affect the sales tax, or create a new tax. Find more information at https://www.glenwoodrps.org.

Five Glenwood Middle School TAG Robotics teams participated in the 2024 Iowa State Robotics Competition. The TAG Robotics team consisting of Brecken Abbott (8th. grade), Wyatt Bencker (7th. grade), Lyric Lundvall (7th. grade), Logan McDaniel (7th. grade), and Kolton Thompson (7th. grade) earned the VEX Robotics Excellence Award, which qualifies them to go to the VEX Worlds Championship in Dallas, Texas at the end of April! This team is the Top All-Around Team (Robot Performance and Judged) in the state of Iowa! The Excellence Award is the highest award presented in the VEX Robotics competition. This award is presented to a team that exemplifies overall excellence in building a high-quality robotics program. This team is a strong contender in numerous award categories. The TAG Students created and programmed robots, and documented work in engineering notebooks. Robotics encourages curiosity, creativity, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving among groups. TAG Students were provided with exciting robotics challenges that enhance science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills through hands-on, student-centered learning. Students observed how the robot performed, questioned why the robot performed as it did, and troubleshot the program using the information gathered. Robotics prepares students for a technological future.

We have received several questions about the vote to renew the Revenue Purpose Statement on March 5. Below is an example. You can also find the answers to FAQs at https://www.glenwoodrps.org/. Q: What happens to SAVE funds if the RPS extension is not renewed? If the RPS is not renewed on March 5, GCSD will most likely close Kids Place and THRIVE when the district moves away from the GRC campus due to its inadequate infrastructure and facilities. However, if the RPS is not renewed before 2031 and our bonded indebtedness goes beyond 2031, every penny of SAVE funding GCSD receives would be diverted to pay off the bonded indebtedness and not be available for facility repairs such as roofs, carpet, windows, lighting, painting, or for technological projects like safety and security, computers for students, access points, servers, software licenses. Instead, these expenses would compete for general fund dollars, where 80% of that fund is dedicated to staff salaries and benefits, and the other 20% is money that supports programming for students. Last fall, 35 Iowa school districts had an RPS up for renewal votes. All 35 passed with the overwhelming support of 70-90% in favor. Of those districts, 19 have bonded indebtedness.

We have received several questions about the vote to renew the Revenue Purpose Statement on March 5. Below is an example. You can also find the answers to FAQs at https://www.glenwoodrps.org/. Q: Why is 2051 the RPS extension date? That is the year established by the Iowa Legislature when SAVE is scheduled to sunset. A school district’s voters can consider renewing an RPS any time before it expires. The previously approved RPS for GCSD will expire in 2031. If approved on March 5, the renewed RPS would take effect in 2031 and remain for 20 additional years.

8th grade students have all been reading the book A Night To Remember by Walter Lord. This book details the unfortunate tragedy that was the sinking of the Titanic. Within the book students have read about the real-life experiences people witnessed as the ship went down in 1912. In this class experience, students were randomly given a boarding pass with the name of a passenger and their class distinction on the ship. Students sat with either 1st Class, 2nd Class, 3rd Class, or became a member of the crew. Throughout the two-day experience, students discovered what life would have been like as a passenger or crew member. This was a fun experience to share as a class before finishing our unit and the book.
