Ms. Phillip's class enjoyed their last community outing by practicing their map reading skill while on a scavenger hunt around the square. Some of their stops included the Glenwood Library, Young Vision, Round Table, Bucksnort & Sugar Makery. It was a great way to end a fantastic year of learning!

Big Shoutout to the K-Kids Club (grades 3-5) of our local Kiwanis chapter who were at work during Teacher Appreciation Week decorating and delivering potted flowers to teachers. This year, the K-Kids had a special additional task of surprising Principal O'Grady by decorating her office to congratulate her on her retirement from West Elementary.
The Glenwood Kiwanis Club has active student chapters from grades 3-12, K-Kids at West, Builder's Club at the middle school, and Key Club at the high school.

Mrs. Yates and Mrs. Diekmann's writing classes partnered with the Sugar Makery to finish out their persuasive writing unit. Students came up with a new Monday Munchie idea and wrote a letter explaining the name of their munchie, ingredients, and reasons why their munchie was the best idea. Sugar Makery owners, Alexis and Malcolm McCue, read all of the letters and selected two winners. Liam will have his munchie "Devils Popcorn" featured as the Monday Munchie on May 22nd. Kynlee's munchie "Caramel Delight" will be the Monday Munchie on May 29th. They will be available at both Sugar Makery locations (Glenwood & Council Bluffs).

Congratulations go out to Sandra Dollen!!! At the 5/8/23 school board meeting Dr. Lang recognized Sandra Dollen, Coordinator for GCSD Teammates School-Based Mentoring for her efforts in growing the Teammates chapter to the largest in Iowa!

Mrs. Finn's class had their last family event of the school year. It was held at a local farm where kids and families had an up-close and personal look at farm animals, including feeding them treats!

Coach Sloth, Children's Author and former College and Arena Football player, got the chance to come to West and share his books and past life experiences with students. Students were also able to help act out one of his most popular books, Hank the Bully. Thank you Coach Sloth!

The month of May means that middle school students are talking about the importance of integrity. Mr. Miller's class meeting group was able to participate in a balloon challenge this week. Students were tasked with keeping the balloons in the air as long as they could. The only catch is that they could not use their hands to keep the balloons up! It was up to students to act with integrity and not use their hands to help. This proved to be a fun challenge for all.

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, the Student Sunshine Committee is hosting FUN morning games in the gym before school starts. Today was "Wrap up the School Year!" Mr. Berke, Mrs. Buckingham, Ms. Miller and Mrs. Mitchell selected four students to race against each other in who could wrap up the teacher the fastest.

In Ms. Prucka's High School English Class, the students learned what themes and topics are earlier in the unit. Now the students are collaborating together to teach what these terms are by creating an "academic poster." Within the poster, the students are teaching the definitions, examples, how the theme develops throughout a text, and how to determine a theme.
