'Tis the season for generosity! This year, a total of $2,600 was donated by all the buildings for the Love Tree initiative. Last week, West Principal Kara Huisman and Northeast Principal Ashlie Salazar personally delivered the collected funds. The generous donation was contributed by the dedicated staff members from each building within the Glenwood Community School District. The Love Tree project is dedicated to providing holiday gifts to families in the local community.

Mrs. Shamani Langille took 19 GCMS Talented and Gifted (TAG) students to compete in the Lynx Robotics Battle in the Bluffs at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs. All GCMS teams competed in 16 qualification matches. Two teams went to the Quarterfinals. One team made it to the Semifinals! This was their first robotics tournament. They had an alliance with students from Iowa School for the Deaf, so communicated through a sign interpreter. The students are excited to continue to work this robotics season. They continue to improve their coding skills, engineering notebooks, and strategies to help them improve their driving skills. They will employ the use of sensors for their upcoming tournaments in January. Students overcame challenges in the tournament and had a lot of fun! It was a fun filled day for our students and families!

Iowa Department of Education released the new state school performance ratings and federal designations DES MOINES – The Iowa Department of Education released the new Iowa School Performance Profiles, which includes new state school performance ratings and federal designations. The website shows: Schools that have been identified for additional support and improvement based on their performance to meet requirements of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Of the 468 total schools currently identified in need of targeted assistance and support, nearly half of all were identified because their students with disabilities performed below the level of the lowest 5 percent of all schools. Updated scores and state school performance ratings for all public schools in Iowa based on how they performed on multiple measures, including student proficiency and growth, in the 2022-23 school year. Ratings range from exceptional (highest performing), high performing, commendable, acceptable, needs improvement, and priority (lowest performing). Shout out to Glenwood High School for demonstrating the largest growth in performance profile score within the district from 2022 to 2023, by increasing its overall rating 4.4%.! Congrats to Glenwood Middle School for their consistency in maintaining their commendable status four consecutive years from 2019-2023 (no ratings in 2020). Congrats to both Northeast and West for garnering high performing status for now four consecutive years!
