Hunter Safety/Trap Club

Thursday, February 2, 2023

Dear Parents,

We want to provide information concerning Hunter Safety Education, sponsored by our South West Iowa Sportsmans Club (SWISC), and our Trap Club, also sponsored by SWISC. Please see below:

HUNTER SAFETY EDUCATION:

The course is Thursday evening, 6-9 PM, Feb 16, AND all-day Saturday the 18th, 8 AM – 4 PM attendance at both is required for earning a Hunter Education Certificate required to buy a state Hunting license in about 37 states. We teach from a manual and the Iowa Hunting Regs. There is a closed book-written 50-question test that must be passed to gain the certificate. An Iowa Conservation Officer teaches the law enforcement and game regulation section, and certified SWISC Instructors cover many other topics and conduct the live fire shooting (archery, .22 cal rifle, 20 ga shotgun at trap and skeet, and a field exercise). All the equipment for the course is provided by IA DNR, and NO Private equipment - guns or ammo is allowed.

It is a very compact and fast-moving course.  Do dress for the weather and bring a sack lunch for Saturday parents are welcome to sit in.

If you sign up for the course, we will mail you a copy of the manual and regulations for you to study before the class this will require you to email me your snail mail address so I can send you the homework.

GCSD/SWISC TRAP CLUB:

It is still not too late to join!  Do You Need a Christmas Present for a Glenwood High School Student?  How about a 12-gauge shotgun and a membership in GCSHC Trap Club?  The GCHS Trap Club has been in operation for ten years. The objective is safe gun handling, hand/eye coordination, muscle memory training, competition, and having fun making noise and breaking things. Training will start in January at the SWISC Range. We meet on Sunday afternoons and some Wednesday evenings. In March / April, we go to Saturday meets with other area clubs. The end of the year is the Iowa Statewide tournament in Cedar Falls, with over 4,000 shooters participating,

Eight certified, licensed, and dedicated Coaches oversee all the Club's shooting, gun handling, and transportation. Each athlete pays $ 350 for the year (although this year, with the availability of ammunition and the costs of everything continuing to climb, we may need to raise that amount). In the end, the payment only covers less than half of the amount spent; the remainder comes from grants, donations, and fundraisers. Eight certified, licensed, insured, and dedicated volunteer coaches oversee the gun handling, storage, practice, and transportation of the Club personnel and equipment. The SWISC provides the coaches and shooting facilitates. GCSHS provides accounting services and student supervision. Many area colleges offer shooting programs, and some have scholarships.  This year SWISC is conducting a contest that, if successful, will offer a Trap Club scholarship prize.
