Training

The school Transportation Department strives to maintain an adequate number of permanent/part time drivers and substitute drivers. Driver recruitment is ongoing. The driving opportunity offers great hours, competitive wages, friendly work environment, and limited benefits for permanent/part time drivers. School transportation provides a great work schedule for retirees, stay-at-home parents or swing shift workers. It is a rewarding and satisfying opportunity to earn extra income while working approximately 2-4 hours per day.

New bus driver applicants will be able to take advantage of the knowledge and experience of GCSD staff during preparation for CDL testing. Onsite training is available to drivers who wish to have a Class B Commercial Driver License, with Passenger transport, Airbrake and School Bus endorsement. A school bus with trained staff personnel will also be available to practice driving. In addition, Glenwood Community School District personnel will take a school bus to the exam station for testing and reimburse you for your license.

All school bus drivers shall attend mandatory classes or schools of instruction when offered by the State Department of Education. New drivers are required to complete a School Transportation Operator Program which consists of online training in the first six months as a bus driver and a 3-hour in-service annually. Veteran drivers are required to have three hours of training each school year.

All school bus drivers are also subject to random Drug and Alcohol Testing; selections are made by the Iowa Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
