Parents & Students

Activities such as athletic events and programs held on school nights (Monday-Thursday) will usually end at no later than 9:00 p.m.  In agreement with the Glenwood Ministerial Association, no school activities are held on Wednesday after 5:30 p.m.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE ON THE DAY OF AN ACTIVITY

Students who wish to participate in a school activity and/or athletic event, including rehearsals or practices, must be in school at least 1/2 of the day on which the activity is scheduled.  Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed by the principal.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ACTIVITIES AND ATHLETICS

All middle school students who are participating in any extra-curricular activity should maintain acceptable academic progress, a C- or better in all classes.  Such activities may include, but are not limited to, athletic events, Student Council, Builders’ Club, Readers’ Theater, band and choir performances, and the talent show.  Academic progress will be checked a minimum of every four and one-half weeks. There may be cases when a student who is not working up to his or her ability may be declared ineligible until satisfactory improvement has been made.  The principal, teachers, counselor and coach or sponsor will monitor the academic status of all students participating in an activity.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

The Iowa State Athletic Association require annual physical examinations (by a licensed physician) for all students participating in athletics.  Physical exam forms may be picked up in the office or from the student's coach.  Each athlete's completed examination form will be kept on file by the athletic director.

ATHLETIC INSURANCE

Parents are responsible for personal health and accident insurance coverage for their child if he/she participates in athletics.  The Glenwood School District DOES NOT provide any type of medical insurance coverage for students who are injured while on school property or while participating in school sponsored athletics/events.  The Glenwood Community School District's only role in making insurance available is to distribute application forms for supplemental insurance provided by Mutual of Omaha.  (Please refer to page 6 of this handbook, "Student Insurance.")

TRANSPORTATION HOME FROM OUT-OF-TOWN EVENTS

Members of an organization or athletic team are to ride home from "away" school sponsored games/events on the school bus UNLESS the student's parents have requested other means of transportation.  This parental request may be made either in person or in writing.  Either way, alternative transportation arrangements must be approved prior to the event by both the coach/sponsor and the principal.

GOOD CONDUCT

As a representative of the team, organization, school, and community, students are expected to keep certain standards of behavior.  Your appearance, language, and actions are on display and the team, organization, school, and community will suffer from a poor representative.

Disciplinary steps for breach of good conduct may result in suspension from the activity or organization.

Following is a list that may include, but is not limited to, examples of poor representation:

bullet

Engaging in any activity that would be grounds for arrest or citation in the criminal or juvenile court system (excluding minor traffic offenses.)

bullet

Use and/or possession of alcohol, tobacco, and/or controlled substances

bullet

Displaying poor conduct and/or sportsmanship

A suspended student will be ineligible to participate in extra/co-curricular activities until reinstated by the building administrator. Following is a list that may include, but is not limited to, activities that are included in this policy:  athletic events, Student Council, Builders’ Club, Drama, Choir and/or Band performances and Talent Show.  The number of offenses by a student will determine the length of the suspension.  The suspension will be served by school calendar days during an active season, excluding vacation days.

Upon receipt of a complaint, the building administrator or athletic director will conduct an investigation of the alleged violation.  The student will be notified of the alleged violation and given an opportunity to respond to the allegation(s).  If the student is found to have violated the Good Conduct Policy, the student and his/her parent/guardian will be notified of this decision by the building administrator.   A letter will be sent in all cases to the parents/guardian notifying them of the decision.

Each violation will be dealt with on an individual basis with the Activities Director and Principal.  The following guidelines will be used:

A student who has been found to have violated the Good Conduct Policy shall be penalized as follows and will not be allowed to participate in any extra/co-curricular activities during the time period.

bullet

First Offense:  25% of contests

bullet

Second Offense:  50% of contests

bullet

Third Offense: Privilege to participate in extra-curricular activities may be revoked for the remainder of the school year.

Violation of the Good Conduct Policy will be cumulative throughout a student’s years at Glenwood Middle School.  Once a determination has been made that a student has violated the Good Conduct Policy, the eligibility period will begin.  If at the time of the violation, the student is not currently participating in any activity, then the student’s period of ineligibility shall apply to the first activity or activities in which the student registers or participates.  A disciplinary action may carry over from one activity to another and may carry over from one school year to another.  Extenuating circumstances may require other action to be taken by the principal.

CANCELLATION OF EVENT DUE TO WEATHER

Anytime there is an early dismissal or school cancellation due to weather conditions, all middle school events, practices and rehearsals will also be cancelled for that day.   If a game/activity is postponed due to weather, practices and/or rehearsals will be held at the discretion of the principal and activity sponsor.

ACTIVITY TICKETS

Middle school students may purchase a $35.00 an activity ticket that will admit them to any HOME event with the exception of some athletic tournaments and fundraisers.  Middle school students are NOT REQUIRED to purchase an activity ticket.  Students not purchasing an Activity Ticket will be expected to pay the designated ticket price for the event. Admission will vary on other fundraising events.

Every student will develop the skills to be an independent, cooperative, respectful citizen with a positive attitude.
