School
authorities may search without a search warrant, a student, student lockers,
desks, work areas, or student automobiles based on a reasonable suspicion under
the circumstances and in a manner reasonable in scope to maintain order and
discipline in schools, promote the educational environment, and protect the
safety and welfare of students and school personnel. School authorities may also seize any illegal, unauthorized
or contraband materials discovered in the search.
Items of contraband may include but are not limited to non-prescription
controlled substances, such as marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, barbiturates,
alcoholic beverages, tobacco, weapons, explosives, poisons, pornography, drug
paraphernalia and stolen property. Possession
of such items will be grounds for disciplinary action and may be grounds for
reporting to local law enforcement authorities.
Student
Valuables and/Or Nuisance Items
Students
should not bring large amounts of money to school nor items that do not
contribute to learning. Bringing nuisance items to school is prohibited. Some
examples of nuisance items are toys, radios, cassette players, ear phones,
electronic toys or games, laser pointers, cameras, pagers, squirt guns,
sunglasses, stuffed animals, sports cards, gum, candy or other snacks. Nuisance
items will be confiscated and returned at the discretion of the teacher or
principal. The school will not be responsible for lost
or stolen items.
