ENGLISH - MRS. GOOS The seventh grade English curriculum encompasses reading, writing, and vocabulary building. Students improve their reading skills and are presented with literature from short story, novel, and nonfiction genres. They work on developing skills in descriptive and expository writing. Sentence and paragraph structure are emphasized. READING - MRS. WRIGHT Seventh grade reading stresses the development of reading and thinking skills through study of genres such as novels, short stories, non-fiction, drama, and folk literature. Students are asked to draw inferences, interpret meaning, compare and contrast, analyze and critique as they explore the various genres. Other reading strategies that will also be stressed are self-questioning, visualizing, re-reading and rate. GEOGRAPHY - MR. STANLEY Seventh grade geography seeks to provide students with a basic knowledge of the modern nations of the world by exploring their physical, cultural, historical, economic, and political geography. Students are encouraged to discuss world problems, suggest solutions, and recognize the contributions of various peoples of the world’s community. LIFE SCIENCE - MRS. LEWIS The four main components of the seventh grade science course deals with the study of the environment (Loess Hills), physics, health and biotechnology. The student is also introduced to basic laboratory study techniques. HEALTH - MRS. LEWIS The seventh grade health curriculum will be incorporated in science and will explore four areas:

Parents/guardians should also be aware that they may opt their student out of all or any part of the health course. MATHEMATICS – MRS. CARNEY The course of study in the seventh grade mathematics program will include many important mathematical ideas, such as a study of numbers and their operations, geometry, mathematical sentences (equations and inequalities,) and an introduction to the metric system. There will be a review of the concepts and skills presented in the elementary school to strengthen the understanding of basic mathematical operations that have been learned in former years. The ultimate goal in seventh grade math is to help students understand mathematics and use what they have learned in a skillful and productive way in their lives. PRE-ALGEBRA – MRS. CARNEY Seventh grade students who are approved to take pre-algebra as their seventh grade math requirement, will study sets, operations with whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, geometry, exponents, and the metric system. These topics, together with the associated skills, form an essential part of a mathematical background that all students need as adults, while at the same time laying a solid foundation for any future work in mathematics. COMPUTER SKILLS – MRS. DASHNER This course will provide learners with the necessary computer skills to access, evaluate, and utilize information and communicate effectively. Course topics include basic computer operation, file management, keyboarding, technology in the world, social and ethical technology issues, Internet research, word processing, spreadsheet, and multimedia presentations. PHYSICAL EDUCATION - MR. STARNER Physical education is an integral part of the total educational process, and is a field of endeavor which has as its aim the development of physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially fit individuals. This will be accomplished through a variety of physical activities, selected and driven by course outcomes. In compliance with Title IX, Glenwood Middle School will have co-educational physical education. Physical education class is required for all students, unless they have been excused, in writing, by a doctor. SEVENTH GRADE EXPLORATORY UNITS *Note: All seventh graders will take one nine-weeks unit of each of the following exploratory classes: INTRO TO DRAMA - MRS. HUNDT Exploratory drama is designed as a hands-on drama course. Students will be immersed in all aspects of taking a production from start to finish, from auditioning to staging, from set design to make-up application, from direction to taking direction, from rehearsing to performing: students will be a part a a drama production. This course is intended to be a positive, interactive, team building experience. FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE - MRS. CAIN Seventh grade Family and Consumer Science is an exploratory course in the areas of food, clothing care, child care, and grooming. Much of the time will be spent on foods, studying the food pyramid, reading and understanding a recipe, measuring, kitchen safety, using kitchen equipment, table settings, and the preparation of simple meals. A few days of the course will be spent discussing child care, and relationships. The clothing unit will cover the care of clothing, using the iron, and sewing on buttons. SKILLS FOR ADOLESCENCE - MR. BUELTEL The seventh grade skills program is designed to help the student develop good self-esteem with an emphasis on positive decision making, especially in the area of preventing drug use and abuse. STUDY SKILLS – MRS. WRIGHT The exploratory class, Study Skills, will guide students to develop such skills as time management, organization, and test taking strategies to enable them to participate more completely in their classes. Special attention will be paid to reading textbook and other non-fiction material for better understanding and to organizing and writing research material. SEVENTH GRADE ELECTIVE COURSES
CHORUS - MRS. PETTY The middle school vocal music program provides students with a variety of opportunities to explore musical concepts (vocal production, reading, listening and rehearsal skills, musical elements, performance appreciation, and cultural awareness,) while demonstrating positive communication skills, self-esteem, and positive social behaviors. Students develop an appreciation for many musical styles and learn to read three- and four-part music. Concerts, festivals, clinics, and community performances offer enjoyable experiences for students who have a special interest in music as a career or for personal pleasure. GENERAL MUSIC – MRS. PETTY General Music is offered as an elective to 7th and 8th grade students. Composers and musical styles of historical eras, past and present day, are researched and samples of the music identified. A wide variety of cultural and ethnic music from around the world is explored. Students learn basic music reading skills and are graded on quizzes, reports, and classroom projects. BAND - MR. SCHOENING In the instrumental music program, the student continues the development of their skills and has expanded opportunities for participation in a number of out-of-school activities. Students will participate in the Southwest Iowa Band Jamboree in Clarinda, the homecoming parade, Band Night, three concerts and one or two large group contests. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in solo and ensemble contest, numerous honor bands and jazz band. All students will receive individual or small group lessons in addition to band class. ART 7-8 - MR. BUELTEL Seventh and eighth grade art students attend class together. They will explore various media with an emphasis on drawing, painting, clay, print-making, and graphic art. Students will also learn about various artists and art movements seen throughout history, allowing them to develop skills of seeing, understanding, and making judgments about their own art as well as that of others. A personal drawing journal with weekly assignments provides for personal growth in skills as well as art concepts. SEVENTH GRADE ASSIGNED CLASSES SPECIAL PROGRAMS - MS. FISHER, MS. KRASHIN, MRS. WINUM AND MS. HOFMANN Special programs are available to seventh grade students who may require individualized remedial instruction in math, science, or language arts. Small classes and individualized instruction makes possible a program geared to meet current individual needs regardless of grade placement. Math and language arts attempt to acquaint the student with the basic needs of everyday living, while science explores the different aspects of life science through the discovery method.
