GHS Administrators  Mrs. Newman | Mr. Arkfeld | Mr. Portrey

Principal

Good Morning Parents!

I truly can’t believe how fast this year has gone.  Some of the end of year dates and activities are as followed:

  • Tuesday, May 6 -Senior Award’s night (MS auditorium @ 7:00 p.m.).  All the seniors who are receiving an award have been notified.
  • Thursday, May 8 -Honors Vocal Concert (7:00 p.m. high school gym)
  • Monday, May 12 -School Board Meeting (7:00 p.m. Central Office)
  • Tuesday, May 13 -Spring Parade of Bands (7:00 p.m. high school gym)
  • Wednesday, May 14 -Baccalaureate (7:00 p.m. @ West Auditorium)
  • Sunday, May 18 -Graduation (2:00 p.m. – hopefully outside on the football field)

What’s New:

  • We have several students (I believe 14) in the Mills Masquers production of a "A Midsummer Night's Dream.”  It is a great show! Show dates are May 2, 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m., and May 3 and 10 at 2 p.m.
  • Seniors!  Seniors will have their last day of school and classes on Thursday, May 15.  On Friday, May 16 we will have the seniors get their robes, practice for graduation, watch their senior video and have their senior picnic.   Seniors will be given a number of tickets (7 – 10) for graduation.  These tickets will only be used if graduation has to be moved inside to the gym (rain).  If graduation is outside (which we hope!) you may have as many guests as you like.
  • I copied and pasted the information on final exams.  It is very lengthy.  If you have any questions about finals, please let me know.

Just a reminder to all parents:

Final exams are comprehensive and reflect what is truly important in each course--the concepts that we want kids to remember long after they leave each class.  They are based on the benchmarks, the essential learnings of each course.  The format for the final exams may vary, depending on the class.  Your child may be putting together presentations, projects, etc. to show what they have learned.

The final exam schedule is the same as it was last year.  Essentially, there will be four finals on Monday (19th) (even hours) and four on Tuesday (20th) (odd hours) and then there will be no finals on Wednesday (21st).  Wednesday will have an 11:20 a.m. dismissal and is the last day of school.  Teachers will follow the final exam schedule listed above.  While in the individual testing blocks, students will not be allowed to leave “early” once they have taken their final.  So there is no reason for students to “rush” through their test.

In keeping with the Student Handbook, any student who skips a final exam will be given a failing grade for the semester.  Please make arrangements with each of your child’s teachers if you are not going to be here for final exams.

For all students (9-11) who have a signed parent permission slip (printed below), there will be open lunch (they will be allowed to leave) and will be allowed to leave if they do not have a scheduled final.  This includes band, vocal, PE, and study hall classes (unless otherwise directed by that teacher).  Given this, there should be very few students who have 8 finals.

Students who are not taking finals and are NOT able to leave the building are to report to the cafeteria, informal area, or sign in at the library.  They can’t roam the building disrupting the testing blocks.

If you would like your child to STAY in the building and get extra help or use it for study time, please do not sign this permission slip.

My child, _______________________________________________ Grade_______________

has my permission to leave the building for lunch during final exams and leave the building if not previously scheduled to take a final during any particular period.  As stated in the handbook, I understand that if my child skips a final exam he/she will fail that course for the semester.
