SPRING SPORTS ARE OFF AND RUNNING - Literally
Let the spring weather come. Today, Monday March 10, we will have two more spring sports starting – Girls Tennis and Girls Golf. Next week all spring sports will be in full swing. Make sure that you look below for the Parent Meetings scheduled for your child as it is important to hear the coach talk about practice plans and other various guidelines per sport. As with all activities, physicals and good conduct sheets must be filled out before they are to participate in practice. Academic ineligibility is lower than last year at this time so continue to work on your studies to stay involved with your activity.
Over the weekend, there were many students active with Speech and FFA. The speech members did very well and hope to hear soon on any students nominated for All-State. There are two students, Carrissa W. and Joe B. that will be advancing to STATE FFA contest on April 14th and 15th. Carrissa will be competing in public speaking while Joe will be involved in the Greenhand category.
Congratulations also needs to go out to the Show Choir for their performances last week and their competition that they had at Lewis Central. The performance was fabulous in-front of a full gym of parents and friends. Along with show choir, the band has been doing great things as well. They held there concert last week and also had a full house of supporters. If you did not have a chance to see either of them, you don’t want to miss another fine arts activity tomorrow (Tuesday, March 10th) as the Jazz band performs at 7:00pm at the High School.

RAM activities were very busy and very successful over the weekend. Starting with the Wrestling team, they are sending 4 wrestlers to the STATE tournament on Thursday of this week. The following students have qualified in their respective weight class: Steve G. at 112, Joey B. at 171, Andrew D. at 189, and Jason L. at 215. This year Glenwood was the smallest 3A school to compete and will represent very well in Des Moines. Wrestling will be in the morning starting at 9:00am each day (Thursday - Saturday). If interested in tickets please contact Matt Dyer, Head Wrestling Coach, at dyerm@glenwoodschools.org or by calling West Elementary during the school day. Both boys and girls basketball teams were victorious as they beat Atlantic for the complete SWEEP for the year. As the boys were able to win a close game at home, Christa S. added one more record to her career by scoring 39 points in a single game. The girls open district play this week in Harlan at 7:00pm on Wednesday the 13th of February. The boys have one last regular season game at home against rival Lewis Central on Tuesday. Districts for the boys will begin on Monday the 18th in Glenwood as they will try to beat Atlantic for the third time this year. Game time is 7:00pm. Believe it or not, Track begins for the boys and girls today (Monday, February 11th). Check the school calendar for all other starting dates and dates of competition.

Busy weekend for Ram Activities. Beyond the normal basketball and wrestling events going on, students also participated in some Fine Arts activities. Your Jazz Choir group received a 2 rating while at Winterset. They will be competing in Atlantic tonight (Monday) for the State Show Choir. As mentioned last time, the Speech team has also done very well and will be competing on Saturday (Feb. 2nd)in Des Moines.
Wrestling had a bitter sweet week by beating up on Harlan on Thursday but losing to Creston in the same night. This past weekend, they continued to show a lot of heart by placing 5th in the Hawkeye Ten Conference meet. They fell 3 1/2 points shy of placing in front of Atlantic. As your wrestling team is fighting injuries to varsity wrestlers, they are hoping they will be healthy by Districts on February 9th in Sioux City North High School starting at NOON. I would also like to Congratulate Coach Dyer as he has been named District Coach of the Year in Class 3A. With this, he will now be nominated for Coach of the Year for the STATE. This year Glenwood will be wrestling in class 3A which is higher than the past few years. Although it may be a higher classification, the program doesn't plan on lower expectations. The team has been competing in all matches this year and I expect the Districts to be an exciting time for Glenwood fans.
Basketball Fans saw the boys win their second game in a row against Shenandoah. The girls beat Red Oak on Tuesday but had Shenandoah slip through their hands on Friday. The girls have proven that they can play with the best in the conference but haven't had the luxury of winning any of those close games. Both boys and girls will be traveling to Clarinda for a DH on Tuesday and then the boys will host Creston on Friday as the girls are on the road. Districts for the boys and girls are just around the corner as the girls go to Harlan on February 13th for a 7:00 game. The boys will be hosting on February 18th for the second year in a row. Official pairings and times will be posted by February 4th.
Come out and support all of the Glenwood Activities by showing how much you appreciate the long hours and many late nights that the player’s, and coaches put in.

Week of 1/14
Great Weekend for RAM activities. The wrestlers had a 62-15 win over Underwood and had some individuals do very well against a strong Lewis Central team last week. They also went to the Basehor-Linwood tournament which is always very tough competition and finished 11th overall out of 30 teams. The Rams had 5 wrestlers place with Andrew Davis finishing 2nd overall. The boys and girls basketball teams competed very well against Harlan on Friday after they both beat good Atlantic teams the previous Tuesday. The boys also played Blair last Saturday and came away with a 20 point win. There has been some changes lately in the schedules so make sure that you keep checking for those last minute changes. SWIBA is at Red Oak today for the Honor Band Concert and this Saturday, your Large Group Speech team will be going to Clarinda for District competition.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all RAM FANS for their support that they have been giving to the athletic teams this year. Sportsmanship is and will always be a priority for our school. Overall, I have observed pretty good sportsmanship and would like to thank-you for improving on that the past two years. As easy as it is to complain, I have yet to see it make any difference in any competition, so be supportive and respect the individuals that are trying to do their best.

RAM activities update:
WRESTLING: The varsity boys went to Des Moines Valley last week and came back with two 1st place finishes and one 2nd place. Overall, the boys finished 3rd behind Indianola and DM Valley. Prior to Saturday, they beat Abraham Lincoln and Shenandoah on Thursday. Glenwood had some very good performances individually as they beat two good teams. The Denison / Creston match will be made up on two separate nights. Creston will come to Glenwood on January 24th to wrestle before the Harlan dual. Start time will be 5:30 for the match on January 24th. The Denison match will be made up on January 31st in Denison. Start time for this match will be at 6:00pm.
BASKETBALL: The girls basketball game with Red Oak will be on the 15th of December. Start time will be 4:00 for the JV and the varsity will follow. Due to injuries and low numbers, their will not be a freshman game. The boys will not play Red Oak until January 5th starting at 4:00 and 5:45 with JV playing first. Also, the boys 9th and JV games with Clarinda on December 15th have been moved to January 7th starting at 6:15. This is the same day as a freshman game in Atlantic so we will split the team up to allow us to not to lose any more games.
Due to the lost of basketball games and wrestling meets, I am in the process of finding schools to compete against. I will try to keep you all informed of any further changes.
REMINIDER: The best and most accurate source of information dealing with activities is by looking on the website: www.highschoolsports.net
Winter Sports have had there first rounds of competition and Wrestling is the first to have something canceled. After opening the season against Battle Creek Ida-Grove Odeboldt Arthur and Carroll Kuemper, they had to stay home from the Harlan Varsity Invite and the Audobon JV Invite. At this time it does not appear that they will be rescheduled. The wrestlers beat Kuemper to start the year and had a strong performance against BCIGOA. There were many positive things that went on but the most notable was the match of Colin W. where he beat the #4 ranked wrestler in class 2A. Coach Dyer has approximately 20 underclassman (Freshman and Sophomores) so there is some inexperience on the team but not a lack of talent and desire. Don’t miss their HOME OPENER this Thursday as they take on Shenandoah and Abraham Lincoln starting at 6:00. It is Alumni / Throw back night so dress up in ‘80’s clothes and help recognize the Alumni from the ‘80’s.
Swimming has one competitor and he is a good one. Tim F. is swimming for his third year and has started off by placing no lower than 2nd in all of his meets. Tim will be swimming this Thursday (December 6th) at Omaha Bryan Jr. High starting at 4:30.
Basketball teams have a couple games under their belt as they will face L.C. this Tuesday (December 4th). The girls will be hosting as the boys will travel. The girls are looking for better results as they are 0-3 and the boys are even at 1-1. There has been a few last minute changes with basketball due to the schools not having enough girls participating so make sure that you visit the schedule on www.highschoolsports.net by using the link on the school page or simply typing it in.

Congratulations to Annika B. for her selection and performance at All-State Music Festival this past weekend at I.S.U.
Winter sport season is here and it appears that the boys wrestling, swimming, basketball and girls basketball teams are ready. Coaches have good numbers out this year as the wrestling team has made some progress with 32 participants and 38 participants in boy’s basketball. Swimming only has one swimmer but the girl’s basketball team has 33 players. Overall in the H-10, numbers are down so Glenwood is doing really well by supporting as many teams as they are. This season appears to be an exciting one as the wrestlers have a couple newcomers and a coaching staff that is very solid as Coach Matt Dyer begins his second year as Glenwood’s Head Coach. Both basketball teams are coming off strong years and hope to continue the winning that was established last season. Just a reminder that SPORTSMANSHIP continues to be a concern for all high schools and the State Association. As we continue to be role models for our youth, please support your child/athlete in a way that you all can be proud of. Through-out the winter, the high school will be implementing some new ideas to see how Glenwood High School can help improve the level of sportsmanship overall in high school sports.
Games to be held in the next two week:
November 20th @ T.J. 4:45 / 6:15 / 7:45 Girls 9th / JV / Varsity

RAM athletics for the fall are nearly complete for all sports and the Football team ended their season with high hopes for next year. Football players will take a two game winning streak into next year by beating rival Lewis Central and a strong Creston team in the last two regular season games. Two gutsy performances helped propel them reach 3 wins overall for the season.
The volleyball girls finished the year with a tough loss to Creston in the first round of Regional’s. They found out how tough it is too beat someone three times in one year. Although the girls may not be happy with the way it ended, you can see that the program is going in the right direction under first year Coach Kim Brehm.
The boys and girls cross-country teams finished their seasons with some tough injuries on both sides. The girls were hit the hardest but showed that they will have some strong runners coming up the next few years. Alden W. represented Glenwood High School by finishing 19th overall at the State XC meet this past Saturday. Coach Peverill and Coach Rasmussen both will have high expectations next year as they both have had young runners on the varsity team.
Your swim team has been strong all year long and now you have two STATE QUALIFIERS: Sam S. and Marissa S. Sam will be competing in the 100 yd. Butterfly while Marissa will be competing in the 500 yard Free-style race. Other individual results were: Kylie H. finishing 19th in the 200 yd. free style and 500 yd. free style. Shelby S. finished 17th in the 200 yd. IM and 12th in the 100 yd. breast stroke. Brooke V.M. placed 4th in the 400 yd. free-style relay, 5th in the 500 yd. free-style, and 11th in the 100 yd. backstroke. As a team, they finished 4th in the Des Moines Roosevelt District. Congratulations and Good Luck Sam and Marissa.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those individuals that have helped make this Fall season a success for the student athlete. It takes a huge amount of help to make one event successful and it would not be possible without all of your help. Thanks to the following:

Your RAMS were victorious Friday night at Perry in overtime. After a defensive battle all night, Bo D. passed to Triton S. for a touchdown on the first play of the overtime. The RAMS will travel to Clarinda for their last road game of the year.
The boys and girls cross-country teams will be running Thursday @ Creston for Conference. The SWI ranked 2nd and the State of Iowa 13th Ranked boys team are hoping to capture the championship as the girls try to take some of the momentum from Atlantic to Creston.
Volleyball has their last home Varsity match tonight (Monday) vs. Red Oak which will also be Senior Night. Come out to show your support for all of the Seniors: Dani H., Jessica M., Allie F., Bailey B., Christa S., and Lexi H. Tuesday they will be traveling to Clarinda and then Thursday to St. Albert.

Your #11 Ranked Volleyball team had another good week on the court. They beat Denison 3-0 early in the week and then finished at 5th place in the Harlan Invite. There losses came from #9 and #2 ranked teams of Carrol Kuemper and Manning. They will need your support on Tuesday as they travel to Lewis Central for a Conference match. On Thursday they will try to payback Atlantic when they participate in a triangular with Abraham Lincoln.
Although we don't have our own swim team, the Glenwood girls have been the back bone of the team. This years five girls are doing very well and are listed in 9 different races with some of the best times in the state. They are swimming at Kirn Jr. High on Tuesday if your able to come out and support them.
Cross-country finally had a chance to run after the weather has cancelled both boys and girls meets. The girls traveled to Nebraska City and came back with a 4th place finish in the Varsity and a 2nd place finish at the Junior Varsity level. The boys went to Newton last week only to have it cancelled as they lined up for the start. This week they both will travel to Shenandoah to compete if the weather cooperates.
Football team had a HOME game finally but came up short in a hard fought game against Atlantic. The freshman game was also hard fought as they won in a very close game. The freshman will play in a double header next week at Carrol before the JV as there won't be a freshman game this coming Friday due to HOMECOMING.
HOMCOMING is this week which we would like everyone to attend the Pep Rally on the football field Friday. The Pep Rally will begin at 10:30 and be followed with the annual parade around the square starting at 1:30.
Reminders:
Game and practice schedules can be found on www.highschoolsports.net
I am working on an athletic advisory committee to keep the lines of communication open with the public.
Homecoming activities can be found on the school website.
The athletic department will not have any fundraising this year due to the financial commitment of the Booster Club.
Supporting the Booster Club will enable the coaches to coach and players to play.
Chicken fried dinner, hosted by the Booster Club, will be on September 30th at the YMCA starting at 11:00am
Fall calendars are available if you don't have one to post in your business or house.
R.A.M.S. stands for: Respect + Attitude + Motivation = Success
Ram Activities will be going strong this week starting tonight with JV Football hosting the Cyclones of Harlan. The varsity did not fare well last Friday so the Junior Varsity will try to pay them back.
Tuesday will be busy for both cross-country teams and the girls volleyball team. The volleyball team will try to get back on the winning side of things as they travel to Denison. Your top ten ranked boys cross-country team will make a long trip to Newton to face some of the best runners in the state. The girls on the other hand will be traveling to Creston to compete with some of the conference opponents. The girl’s cross-country team will be adding a new meet Thursday by going to Nebraska City in Nebraska City, Nebraska.
Friday will be the first HOME football game with the freshman starting at 4:45pm. Come out and support the RAMS as they try to turn their luck around against the Trojans of Atlantic. Last year it was a hard fought game with the RAMS coming on top. This will be the first opportunity for must fans to hear the NEW SOUND SYSTEM that was purchased by the ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB.

Volleyball fans, you’re in for a great year if the Roncalli Invite is any indication. The girls lost two and won one but showed me a few things that I did not see last year. They are bringing excitement and a no quit attitude that is fun to watch. By the end of the season you will be proud of the girls and what they have accomplished over the year. The Ram Cross-Country Invite was very exciting in more than one way. The weather was very hot initially and finished with a storm that had potential to be dangerous. Both teams competed very well with some personal best times being recorded. The boys finished 2nd overall with Alden Wignal winning the boys meet and setting a new course record. Tonight (Tuesday) the girls will be hosting the Cyclones of Harlan and then travel to Shenandoah on Thursday. Also tonight the Girls Cross-Country team runs at Clarinda starting at 5:00. Football had the week off last Friday but plan on traveling up I-29 to St. Albert for the Varsity only game this Friday. The freshman will play on Thursday here in Glenwood starting at 5:30.
There is a copy of the Harvey Alston presentation ready to be viewed so please call the high school at 527-4897 and schedule your time with Lora Henze. If you choose to purchase the video, just let Lora know and she will have one made for you at $3.00.
As the activities begin to be in full swing, please remind yourself and your student/athlete the acronym that we all need to live by:
R.A.M.S - Respect + Attitude + Motivation = Success
Another school year is in full swing. I hope everyone is ready for a great school year as I feel like we are off to a great start. I hope to give you some updates and information in reference to Activities. First thing that is going to be the highlight of the year is our speaker on Thursday night for parents. Harvey Alston will be speaking on motivation, dedication and work ethic to students during the day and then have a session for parents at 7:00 in the Middle School Auditorium. The parents will be hearing things on work ethic, school pride and parenting the student athlete to name a few. Fall Sports will kick-off this Friday at Carroll in Football. Tuesday the boys and girls host the Ram Invite at the Lake Park starting at 4:30. Finally, Thursday the Volleyball team will begin their season at the Roncalli Invite in Omaha. Don’t forget that the times and dates for activities are listed on www.highschoolsports.net This web site can be located by going to the school web page under links.
Our first full week of school is complete and soon, all athletics will have their first competitions under their belt. The football team had a tough time containing a physical Kuemper team but will rebound against St. Albert after this week being off.
The volleyball team is excited to start their season at Roncalli on Thursday. Game time is 5:45. Don't forget to attend the boys and girls cross-country meet on Tuesday with middle school starting at 4:30. I hope everyone that attended the Speaker on Thursday enjoyed hearing what he had to say. We are working on dubbing the presentation and should have it available at the end of the week. You may purchase the presentation for $2 if you would like. Please call the office and speak to Lora Henze or myself to reserve your video.
