Happy New Year!

Although not optimal, we are completing finals this morning.  The schedule is the same as it would have been Friday, December 19.  The focus of our final exams is the course benchmarks.  The course benchmarks are the essential learnings of each class.  These concepts and skills are what we hope kids learn and remember long after the class is over.  We do analyze the results and adjust the teaching and learning accordingly.

The finals schedule for today is:

Times

Monday – January 5

8:10 a.m. – 9:25 a.m.

2nd hour final

9:31 a.m. – 10:46 a.m.

5th hour final

10:52 a.m. – 11:40 a.m.

LUNCH

11:46 a.m. – 1:01 p.m.

7th hour final

1:07 p.m. – 2:22 p.m.

6th hour final

2:28 p.m. – 3:20 p.m.

Seminar

All the procedures for finals remain the same.
What’s New:

1.      1st semester grades will not be finalized until Friday.  Report cards will be mailed.

2.      Students have already seen their 2nd semester schedules.  They will begin that schedule tomorrow.  If you have any questions or concerns with your child’s new schedule, please ask.

3.      Our winter band/vocal concert was rescheduled for Monday, January 12.  Please join us for some sounds of the season!  It is always a wonderful event.

4.      Our winter sports are on a roll!  Check out schedules and schedule changes on the Activity/Athletic Calendar link from the web page, www.glenwoodschools.org/hs.

Hope you had a wonderful holiday season!  We are looking forward to another great semester with your children.

12/18 Email Announcement - 11:30 AM

Hi Parents-

As you probably have heard, we have a two-hour early dismissal today (Thursday).  That will impact the HS in a different fashion due to finals.

1.      We will have the 4th hour final and then dismiss.  Students will be held the entire time during the 4th hour final.  THIS IS THE ONLY WAY WE CAN MONITOR THE TRAFFIC AND DISMISSAL.  So, our dismissal for everyone but BUS students will be at 1:01 p.m. Bus students should go to the cafeteria and the informal areas and wait for the bus times which should be soon after 1:20 p.m.
2.      I will create and email a couple of Friday schedules.  They will include a regular day schedule and a late start schedule.  If we do not have school at all on Friday, those finals will take place on Monday when we return.

Additional Information
3.      The concert has been cancelled for tonight along with all other practices and JV wrestling.  We are trying to reschedule the concert.  More details on the concert to come.

12/18 Email Announcement - 9:00 AM

Hi Parents -

The forecast is causing me a lot of unwanted stress!  We have tried to communicate some information to our students regarding final exams and other possible cancellations.  I have to remind myself that no matter how inconvenient canceling anything is, the safety of our students is the number one priority.  Nothing is more important!!

Some Information:
1.      You can check a variety of places for information about school cancellations.  These include:

- Your TV stations
- Our district web page:  http://www.glenwoodschools.org or our high school web page:
              http://www.glenwoodschools.org/hs
- A variety of media websites including:

1.      KMA Radio http://kma960.com/includes/schoolcancellations.asp (This is a very nice spreadsheet- easy to read)
2.      WOWT http://www.wowt.com/closings
3.      KMTV http://www.kmtv.com/Global/link.asp?L=227640&nav=menu550_3_10
4.      KETV http://www.ketv.com/weather
·        In addition - Would you like to be notified directly when classes are cancelled?  Sign up for Iowa School Alertshttps://schoolalerts.iowa.gov/ShowHome.do a FREE e-mail notification service provided by the State of Iowa!

2.      At this time I have created several schedule changes with the finals in case of a late-start or an early release on Thursday.  These plans would generally keep in tact the final schedule, except it would move the 6th hour final to Friday.  Friday’s schedule will also be adjusted, based on a late start or an early out, but the classes (periods) scheduled for that day would stay as originally scheduled.

3.      If we are out of school completely, any finals missed will be taken after break.

4.      If the Winter Concert is cancelled, we do not have any definite plans of action.  Mrs. Fast and Mr. Jacobus are giving that some thought.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that any storm will miss us.  I am also remembering I can’t control the weather!!
Thanks for your support and understanding.
Keep safe and warm!

12/12 Email Announcement

Hi Parents -

I hope you are staying warm wherever you are.  While I was working Saturday, I left my office window cracked.  Needless to say, I’m not the favorite around here this morning!  The final exam schedule and the student preparation guide are online, http://www.glenwood.org/hs.  Remember, if your child is not testing, they are not required to be in school.  This includes lunch.  However, if you wish for them to stay or if they are going to stay, we have quiet places to study and we will be serving lunch.  If you have any questions, please ask!

What’s New:

1.      We have a full week of Ram Pride this week!

Pink-Out Tonight!  December 15th, the Varsity girls basketball team will be wearing “pink jerseys” to help celebrate breast cancer survivors on behalf of Glenwood and the Hawkeye 10 conference.  The jerseys were donated and will be shared with other conference schools. The event was initiated by the Carroll Kuemper FCCLA chapter.  All breast cancer survivors will be admitted free to the game and be recognized at half-time of the girl’s varsity game, if they are willing.  We will have 9th grade, JV, and Varsity games tonight beginning at 4:45 p.m.

Black-Out Tuesday night!  December 16th is a Black-Out for the wrestlers. The double dual with Creston & Denison starts at 5:30 p.m. and is one of only two home wrestling duals.

Thursday, December 18, is our Winter Band and Vocal Concert.  It begins at 7:00 p.m. here in our gym.  I promise this will be an amazing performance!  Our students and teachers have so much talent, energy, and enthusiasm it can’t help but be an incredible event!  It will get you “into” the season.  Hope to see you there!

Friday, December 19, our Boys will host a home basketball game against Shenandoah.  This JV and Varsity match up will begin at 6:15 p.m.

2.      Friday, December 19, is our last day of the semester and the last day prior to Winter Break.  Winter Break will be a full two weeks.  Classes will resume Monday, January 5, 2009.

3.      Thanks to all who donated cans and warm clothing!  We really have a lot of generous students and families.  Mills County will truly benefit from your generosity!

4.      Semester grades will be printed on January 6.  They will then be mailed.
