SCHOOL NURSE

Our school nurse, Shari Gregory, is shared with Northeast Elementary School and Middle School.  She provides a health program, which includes height and weight checks in kindergarten; vision screening in first, third, and fifth grade; and continuous immunization record updates.  AEA personnel come to West to conduct hearing tests for all of our students.   Parents will be notified if screening tests are not within normal limits.  These routine school screenings are not intended to replace regular medical, visual or dental check-ups.

STUDENT HEALTH:

(1)  Accidents at School

In case of an accident at school, emergency first aid will be administered and parents will be notified.  If the school is unable to contact a parent, emergency numbers provided will be used.  Parents should notify the school of any changes in information.

(2)  Child Abuse and Neglect

All school employees are required by law to report any suspected case of child abuse or neglect to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

(3)  Exclusion from School

Children who become ill, or have symptoms of illness at school, are sent home after parents/guardians have been notified.  Following are reasons a child may be sent home:

                                         A.  Contagious diseases

                                         B.  Skin eruptions or suspicious rash

                                         C.  Vomiting

                                         D.  Abnormal temperature

                                         E.  Insufficient Hygiene

A child suffering from skin diseases, or who had been absent from school because of an infectious or contagious disease, may be required to present a statement from a doctor upon returning to school.

(4)  Immunization

Effective July 3, 1991, all children entering kindergarten are requiredto have received two doses of measles and rubella containing vaccine prior to entry.  The first dose of measles and rubella containing vaccine must have been given on or after 12 months of age and the second dose separated from the first dose by no less than 30 days.  They are also required to have 3 dates for the DPT vaccine and 3 dates for the Polio vaccine.  One date of each has to be after the age of 4. The Hepatitis B (Series of three)        shot should also be completed before kindergarten.

(5)   The Board of Education believes that the responsibility for prescription, possession, and administration of student's medicine lies with the parent/guardian and physician.  However, the Board also recognizes that certain situations may occur in which it is necessary for medicine to be administered during the regular school day.  In such cases the following procedure should be followed:

A.  Written Approvals

bullet

Parents will need to send a note allowing the school nurse or trained personnel to administer the prescribed medication.

bullet

Prescriptions brought to school will be stored securely.

bullet

The school nurse or teacher will accept up to a month’s supply of medicine.

bullet

The medicine must be brought by a parent to the school in a container with the pharmaceutical label which must state the student's name, prescription, dosage, and manner of administration.

B.  Condition of Administration

bullet

Except for emergency situations, only the school nurse/designee will administer or supervise the administration of a medicine.

bullet

Only the amount of medicine prescribed by the physician will be dispensed at any one time.

bullet

The person administering the medication will maintain a record of students who receive medication and log each dosage.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES FOR HEAD LICE

bullet

If one case of head lice is found in a class, effort will be made for school nurse or other trained personnel to check classmates and notes will be sent home to the parents.

bullet

Preventative information will be sent home to parents in the form of newsletters according to need as identified by school nurse.

Student will be readmitted to school as soon as proof of treatment (e.g., box top of shampoo) is provided to school.  Student will be rechecked upon return to school then  again in 7-10 days by school nurse or other trained school personnel.  (Parents will be encouraged to remove all nits; however, if nit is found ½” from scalp, it will be considered dead.

bullet

In event that 10% or more students in one building are identified to have head lice, a no nit procedure will be enforced until no new cases are determined for two full weeks.
