SEXUAL HARASSMENT

 

All members of the Glenwood Community School District, including, but not necessarily limited to, the board, the administration, faculty, staff, and students, are expected to conduct themselves at all times so as to provide an atmosphere free from sexual harassment.  Any person who engages in sexual harassment while acting as a member of the school community will be in violation of Board Policy 404.3 or 410.2.

 

Sexual harassment involving students or staff means unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.  Sexual harassment may include, but is not limited to the following:

Verbal or written harassment or abuse

bullet

Pressure for sexual activity

bullet

Repeated remarks to a person with sexual or demeaning implications

bullet

Unwelcome touching

bullet

Suggesting or demanding sexual involvement

 

Violations of this policy by students will be cause for disciplinary action up to and including suspension and expulsion.  School employees shall be responsible for promoting understanding and acceptance of, and assuring compliance with, state and federal laws and board policy and procedures governing sexual harassment within the school setting.

                                               

  

HARASSMENT INVESTIGATION PROCEDURE     

 

Students who feel they have been harassed should communicate to the harasser that the

student expects the behavior to stop, if the student is comfortable in doing so.  If the student needs assistance in communicating with the harasser, the student should ask the teacher, counselor, or principal to help.  If the harassment does not stop, or the student does not feel comfortable confronting the harasser, the student should:

Tell a teacher, counselor, or principal; and

bullet

Write down exactly what happened, keep a copy and give another copy to the school official.  The written document should contain the following:

                        1.  What, where, when it happened

                        2.  Who was involved

                        3.  Exactly what was said or what the harasser did

                        4.  Witnesses to the harassment

                        5.  What the student said or did, either at the time or later

                        6.  How the student felt

                        7.  How the harasser responded

An investigation will be undertaken to determine the appropriate steps to follow to resolve the problem.

Points to remember in the harassment investigation:

Evidence uncovered in the investigation is confidential.

bullet

Complaints will be taken seriously and investigated.

bullet

No retaliation will be taken against individuals involved in the investigation process.

bullet

Retaliators will be disciplined up to and including suspension and expulsion.

 

 

                                               

STUDENT-TO-STUDENT HARASSMENT

 

Harassment of students by other students will not be tolerated in the school district and is a violation of Board Policy 501.7.  Harassment on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, marital status or disability means conduct of a verbal or physical nature that is designated to embarrass, distress, agitate, disturb, or trouble students.  Student-to-student harassment may include, but is not limited to, the following:

Verbal, physical, or written harassment or abuse;

bullet

Repeating remarks of a demeaning nature;

bullet

Implied or explicit threats concerning one’s grades, achievements, etc.;

bullet

Demeaning jokes, stories, or activities directed at the student,

 

Student whose behavior is found to be in violation of this policy will be subjected to the investigation procedure.
