Hello Parents-

Today our students are set to challenge social boundaries during our second year participating in "Mix It Up at Lunch Day." Our students will join more than 4 million others across the country to challenge social and racial boundaries on Thursday, Nov. 13, as part of the seventh annual Mix It Up at Lunch Day, a project designed to foster respect and understanding in schools and communities.

Mix It Up encourages students to question and cross boundaries by sitting with someone new in the cafeteria for just one day.  Here in our high school we encourage students to get to know students they might not otherwise meet.  Last year was a great experience and I know this year will be the same.  Although it may not seem like a lot (sitting with someone different at lunch) it really is for our teens!  Check out www.mixitup.org to see all of the wonderful materials that where provided by the sponsors of this event, Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Tolerance project.

What’s New:
1.      This past Tuesday we celebrated Veteran’s Day by creating our First Annual Veteran’s Day Café.  To say it was a success would be an understatement!  We welcomed area Veterans to share their stories with our students.  We had many staff members who made the event possible but Russell Crouch and Karen Barrett truly made the day come alive.  By far the most impressive part of the day was the respect and pride our students showed during the event.  They are a wonderful group!  Thank you for all you do!

2.      I am at the very beginning stages of working with students and various school organizations in creating a “Tree of Warmth.”  This will be a campaign to collect new and used coats, hats, mittens, gloves, scarves, etc. to help families in Mills County stay warm this season.  We will work with area agencies and already established programs (Operation Santa, Love Tree, The Storehouse, etc.) as well as our own identified families in need in order to distribute all donations.  We truly hope that we can combine The Tree of Warmth with our canned-food drive and provide this for our community every year.  I know that all of you will show the support and generosity I have come to expect.  You are truly giving and caring!  You may start bringing items any time.  I’m not sure where we are going to put them now but we will make room!!

3.      The after-prom committee would like to share a few announcements:

a.       There is a meeting on Dec. 3 @ 7:00 p.m. at Breadeaux Pizza.  They are well into the planning of post-prom activities and welcome anyone who can attend.

b.      A clarification on the Poinsettia sales:  All juniors and seniors will be receiving a prize at the after prom even if they did not participate in selling plants.  However, it would help GREATLY if every junior and senior could sell at least one.  Forms are due Friday.  Students can bring those to the main office.  This is a fundraiser for post prom activities and is being chaired by Julie Jameson.

c.       The cost to all juniors and seniors for post-prom is $35.00.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
There is a late start on Tuesday, November 18.

Hello Parents!

I would like to thank all of you who attended our parent-teacher conferences.  I realize that families are very busy and making the time is not always easy.  We do appreciate meeting with you and making those all-important connections between home and school.

What’s New:

1.      Second quarter is off and running.  The first quarter grade and the second quarter grade will combine with the final exam grade to form each student’s semester grade.  The semester grade is what is recorded for credit.  The semester will end as winter break begins, December 19.  Second semester will begin as soon as our students return from break.

2.      Winter sports season is also gearing up.  As always, students must have a physical to participate, including practice.  These forms are available in the main office.  One physical is all that is needed for the year.

3.      We have quite a large selection of lost and found items.  Students have been reminded to come to the office and see if they can claim anything they might have lost.  All items will be bagged and given away on Friday.

4.      The After Prom committee (separate from the dance) is working hard to make the post-prom event a great one.  The cost of After Prom is $35.00.  This amount is due from all Glenwood Juniors and Seniors planning on attending After Prom.  If you have questions please feel free to contact any of our After Prom committee chairs:  Sylvia Lilly (527-9536), Karen Snow (527-3748), and Shari Woodrow (527-5470).  They are wonderful and helpful!!

5.      Don’t miss our Fall Production, Faith County, this weekend!  Performances are Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. (earlier if you are buying a ticket for dinner) and Sunday at 2:00 p.m.  The performance will be here in the cafeteria.  I have heard just enough of the practices to know it will be AWESOME!

6.      Don’t forget to check out our Glenwood Community High School home page, http://www.glenwoodschools.org/hs Student announcements, calendar information, teacher emails, and more can be found here.

7.      The next late start is Tuesday, November 18.  Thanksgiving Break is Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: Nov. 26 – Nov. 28.

Have a wonderful finish to the week!

10/28 Email Announcement

Good Morning Parents!

I am looking forward to seeing you tonight at conferences.  We will greet you at the front door of the high school with your child’s information.  Teachers will be located in the cafeteria and in the gym.  Are hope is that people are spread out enough so that your conferences can be as private as possible, given the format.  Mr. Arkfeld, Mr. Portrey, and I will be available throughout conferences.  In addition, the counselors will be available to answer any questions you might have.

Schedule of Conferences:
Students will be dismissed 1 hour early (2:20 p.m. dismissal) on Tuesday, 10-28 and Thursday, 10-30.  There is no school Friday, October 31.
Conferences are set for 4:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, 10-28 and Thursday, 10-30.

What’s New:
1.      Just a reminder about our cell phone policy- Students may have their cell phones turned on before 8:05 a.m. and after 3:20 p.m. and during lunch.  Students should have their phones off and not visible at all other times.  Any rings or noises from the phone are then counted as a violation.  Our consequence “ladder” is:

  • 1st Violation:  The phone is taken and given to the office.  Student may pick up the phone at the end of the day.  Mr. Portrey records the violation.
  • 2nd Violation: The phone is taken and given to the office.  Starting last week, we call the parent and ask the parent if they would like to come pick up the phone or have their child serve a 1 hour detention.  We used to have the student “choose” but we feel this is a better communication tool with parents.  Mr. Portrey records the violation.
  • 3rd Violation: The phone is taken and given to the office.  The student is informed that they are not allowed to bring their phone to school AT ALL.  If the student needs their phone after school, they must check their phone into the office for the day and pick it up after their school day.  Parents will be called as well.  Mr. Portrey records the violation.
  • 4th Violation:  Student will continue to lose the privilege of having their phone at school at all (added weeks from the semester).  In addition, the student may face suspension because, at this point, they are being insubordinate.

Next year, the 4th Violation will include the school confiscating the student’s phone for up to two weeks. We have very few students who reach a 3rd violation.

2.      Our Fall Production is coming soon!  The GHS Drama Department will be presenting “Faith County” by Mark Landon Smith as a dinner theatre
Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8.  The production and dinner will be presented in the High School Cafeteria.  Key Club will be serving a meal at 6:30 and the show will begin at 7:30.  Dinner reservations are limited and can be made by calling the High School Office at 527-4897.  Cost for the dinner and show will be $15.  If you are interested in attending the show only, you may purchase a ticket at the Box Office the day of the show.

3.      Party Stoppers is an excellent tool for students and parents to help stop underage drinking.  If you would like to report a party or event where there is underage drinking, call 1-866-340-6625.  The call is anonymous and you can earn cash rewards and, more importantly, possibly save a life.

4.      Taste of Glenwood Cookbooks are available through the Glenwood Booster Club.  You can contact our office if you would like to buy a cookbook.  They are twenty dollars and a GREAT value.  I made Deanna Uphoff’s crockpot chicken Sunday and it was great!  The cookbook will make a great gift for the holidays!

Have a great week!!
